No such thing as a free lunch?

Studies have shown that when we work somewhere where there are lots of different things going on to make us feel appreciated and motivated we tend to stay longer and feel more job satisfaction. In fact these gestures are (after a certain salary level where our basic needs are met) more important to us than money. Office perks are great, at Carrot we have lots of extra little benefits to say thanks for all the hard work everyone does. Things like impromptu lunches, beer fridge Fridays, early finish Fridays, Clever Carrot rewards (nominate a colleague for some great things that they have done and then they get to choose from a menu of rewards). Research has shown that companies that scored in the top 20% for building a "recognition-rich culture" actually had 31% lower voluntary turnover rates, this has to be good news!

Making the switch is a simple step that makes a difference to the people working in a company. Carrot switched to a recognition based culture 5 years ago and it has made a huge difference to the office environment. Luckily we already had an intrinsically altruistic culture, where people were really good at sharing glory and shouting up when others had helped them out, so implementing the shift wasn’t that difficult. We ran some workshops around the subject and set up a cross function working team to ensure buy in at all levels. It is something that needs to be continually worked on, and as new staff members join the team, continuing this culture of recognition is backed up through management initiatives and handing some responsibilities to more junior team members to ensure the buy in loop encompasses the whole company.
