Over the next few months, as part of our #LoveYourJob2020 campaign, we're taking a look at the past decade and what the 2020s might have in store for us...
The past decade seems to have flown by but that doesn’t mean some incredible things didn’t happen. There have been some amazing achievements in the scientific community and many life-changing drugs discovered.
We've taken a look at a few of the notable things to happen in past ten years below... will the next ten live up to them?
Events in the science community:
2010 – The first Self-Replicating, Synthetic Bacterial Cells are constructed.
2010 – The Neanderthal Genome Project presented preliminary genetic evidence that interbreeding did likely take place and that a small but significant portion of Neanderthal admixture is present in modern non-African populations.
2012 – Higgs boson is discovered at CERN (confirmed to 99.999% certainty)
2012 – Photonic molecules are discovered at MIT
2014 – Exotic hadrons are discovered at the LHCb
2015 – Traces of liquid water discovered on Mars
2016 – The LIGO team detected gravitational waves from a black hole merger.
2017 – Gravitational wave signal GW170817 was observed by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration. This was the first instance of a gravitational wave event that was observed to have a simultaneous electromagnetic signal when space telescopes like Hubble observed lights coming from the event, thereby marking a significant breakthrough for multi-messenger astronomy
2018 - The first genetically engineered babies (Lulu and Nana)
2019 – The first ever image of a black hole was captured, using eight different telescopes taking simultaneous pictures, timed with extremely precise atomic clocks.
2010 - The FDA approves a new formulation for OxyContin, as a response to the harms associated with the misuse of the drug. As noted by the FDA, "the reformulated OxyContin is intended to prevent the opioid medication from being cut, broken, chewed, crushed or dissolved to release more medication".
2011 - A set of low-risk drinking guidelines are created to help people make decisions about alcohol.
2012 - Washington state and Colorado legalize cannabis for recreational use.
2012 - Coley Award is given for CAR-T therapy.
2013 - Results of CAR-T leukaemia clinical trial released.
2015 - Health Canada approves first clinical trial to investigate the use of MDMA to treat PTSD.
2016 - a study found the VSV-EBOV vaccine to be 95-100% effective against the Ebola virus, making it the first proven vaccine against the disease.
2018 - Medical use of cannabis was legalised in the UK.
