Public Relations revolves primarily around persuasion, as PR experts attempt to convince an audience on a product, promotes an idea, or to recognise their accomplishments.

People working within Healthcare Public Relations specialise in the handling of internal and external communications for pharmaceutical companies. They interact with Brand Managers, Product Managers, marketing departments and specialist patient groups and are often responsible for a range of tasks including writing for internal publications, newsletters, handling calls from the media and the creation of various creative works.

There are four core aspects to a role within Healthcare PR:

  3. Company advisor
  4. Enhance business growth

The most important aspect of any Public Relations roles is the handling of communications between the general public and the client, while building their reputation in the industry. Due to the nature of the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, a PR role within either of these divisions can be both challenging yet highly rewarding and offers plenty of opportunities for growth and development.

 

What does a career within Healthcare PR look like?

There are typically two sides to Public Relations – the promotional side and the protective side. The promotional side covers aspects and roles around content creation, media relations, social media, and community relationships. Roles within the protective side cover reputation and crisis management.

Working within Healthcare Public Relations you need to be highly organised and prepared to deal with a variety of different situations. A typical working week is around 40 hours, but this can vary with deadlines or unforeseen client circumstances.

A career within Healthcare PR can be very rewarding and the career progression opportunities are endless. However, to be successful you’ll need to be able to cope with high levels of stress at times, and have excellent time-management skills in order to deal a heavy workload. As you’ll often be dealing with the media or public, you’ll also need to possess fantastic communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships.

The PR industry is hugely creative and fast-paced and by its very nature is always in need of fresh ideas and talented individuals. This means there are a variety of roles available that require different skills and abilities.
