What is Pharmaceutical Sales?
Pharma Sales Representatives have many options available to them. When starting out in a career in pharmaceutical sales you will be trained fully and pharma companies invest heavily in your development. That is why the process to gaining a job in pharmaceutical sales is very rigorous. If you don’t have prior experience Pharmaceutical companies will expect you to have certain traits as well as having spent time shadowing a pharmaceutical sales rep.
The stakeholders you are selling to are varied. You will be involved in educating and influencing healthcare professionals and key opinion leaders on the benefits of your products. The role is more varied than it used to be in the sense that you will be expected to engage many different stakeholders, including patient groups, to ensure that you understand issues and can provide solutions via your product to the various groups involved. There is a lot of networking involved and information gathering as well as presenting, attending conferences, appointment making and influencing.
You will need to have a flair for sales, have great influencing skills, be well organised, have great tenacity, be professional and trustworthy, well groomed, personable and a natural communicator, have great negotiation skills, persistence, be a team player. There are often many hours spent on the road driving so you will need stamina too.
On the flip side the rewards can be huge and career progression can be speedy, with many avenues open to you such as marketing, overseas work, healthcare sales (different from pharma and does not require the ABPI qualification).
